AI‑assisted rust & coating check from phone photos — private, fast, field‑ready.

RustEye

RustEye is a lightweight, browser‑based tool that estimates surface rust coverage and flags potential coating issues directly from your phone photos. It runs fully on‑device — no uploads required — making it ideal for quick checks in shipyards, dry docks, topsides, yards, warehouses, and remote sites.

• Instant OK / NOT OK based on coverage % thresholds
• Visual overlay of detected areas for rapid review
• Indicative ISO 8501 / ISO 12944 grading helper
• One‑click PNG report for attachments & QA notes
• Works offline after first load (PWA‑ready)

Use cases across industries

Shipbuilding & Repair

  • Side shell, decks, bulwarks, superstructure touch‑ups
  • Dry‑dock QA snapshots before/after blasting & coating
  • Weld seam and HAZ surface rust spot checks

Oil & Gas / Offshore

  • Topside structures, helidecks, flare booms, walkways
  • Subsea hardware pre‑deployment visual checks (ROV stills)
  • Onshore plants: pipe racks, tanks, handrails

Ports, Logistics & Industrial

  • Storage tanks, yard equipment, cranes
  • Container frames, trailers, ramps
  • Facility maintenance rounds & contractor verification

Inspection & Survey

  • Pre‑survey screening to prioritize zones
  • Progress evidence for punch list clearance
  • Attach reports in CMMS/ERP work orders

HSE & Integrity

  • Slips/trips reductions via early leak/rust flags
  • Integrity visuals for toolbox talks
  • Near‑miss documentation with annotated images

Drones, Crawlers, ROVs

  • Run RustEye on captured frames for quick triage
  • Batch‑screening before detailed review
  • Supports on‑edge workflows (no network needed)

How it works (high level)

  1. Capture a clear photo (avoid glare/shadows; add a scale marker if possible).
  2. RustEye detects rust‑like pixels and produces an overlay.
  3. It calculates coverage % and compares with a policy limit to show OK / NOT OK.
  4. Optionally, it provides indicative ISO 8501 / ISO 12944 guidance based on coverage bands.
  5. Export a PNG report with both views and stats for your records.

The current build uses a heuristic mask tuned for speed and offline use.

About the ISO guidance

RustEye includes a non‑binding helper that maps measured coverage bands to common terminology from ISO 8501 (rust grades A–D, cleanliness Sa/St) and ISO 12944 (protective paint systems). This is intended for screening only, not as a formal certification.

What it does
• Bands coverage %
• Produces a human‑readable hint
• Standardizes field notes
What it doesn’t
• Replace certified inspectors
• Guarantee ISO conformity
• Measure profile/adhesion/DFT
Best practice
• Add scale markers
• Use diffuse lighting
• Keep original photos

For audits, pair RustEye with your coating ITP/ITR, DFT readings, and inspector sign‑off.

FAQ

Is RustEye ISO compliant?

No. RustEye provides indicative guidance. For compliance, use certified inspectors and procedures (surface prep, DFT, adhesion, profile, curing).

Will it work in poor lighting?

It works best with diffuse light. Avoid strong glare and shadows. Consider taking 2–3 angles.

Can I use drone/ROV images?

Yes. Upload stills or frames and run analysis. Consistent distance and scale markers improve accuracy.

Is there an API?

Planned.
